Replacement motherboards are offered for Dell desktops and laptops affected by the faulty next-generation Sandy Bridge processor.
Dell will contact customers who purchased the company’s PCs that were affected by flaw Intel chipsets. The computer manufacturer plans to offer all customers who bought Alienware M17x R3 laptop, Alienware Aurora computer, Vostro 460 or XPS 8300 and received a system prior to March 1 to offer a free repair.
The Dell pc repair teams would start reaching customers with faulty motherboards this week to offer them a new replacement motherboard, which rectifies the Cougar Point chipset problem. Further, the replacement motherboard and the related service will be offered to customers free of cost. However, it will take several weeks to invent the advance technologies to work through these motherboard replacements.
Chipsets comprise Serial ATA ports, which may degrade over time. In other words, these ports may never degrade, or it may take a few months to degrade. If ports start to degrade, the functionality of SATA-linked devices like DVD drives and hard disk drives gets affected. This may result into denied access to SATA devices inside the system. These devices comprise Blu-ray optical /DVD drives and hard drives. The Cougar Point chipset is embedded on the system motherboards, which offers support for 2nd Generation Core Sandy Bridge processors.
Intel discovered and declared a design issue in the newly launched Intel 6 Series support chip, which was code-named as Cougar Point. The fault involves an Intel 6-series support chip on the motherboard that is positioned beside the Sandy Bridge chip. A transistor present inside Cougar Point chips is not able to withstand the voltage that passes across it and degrade sooner or later. In other words, bits of your computer could ultimately stop communicating to other bits like hard drive.
Dell has already blocked selling the affected machines since February. It has apparently expended the last two months gazing at the total cost and solving the issue softly. Anyone who has purchased an affected system can return their PC under the standard warranty. However, if anyone is interested to stick on to Sandy Bridge computer, then Dell will go for the motherboard replacement.
Dell began when the problem was discovered first. MSI, HP, Asus and Lenovo have also been affected by the issue. Though other manufacturers have started to be faster off the mark with replacements, Dell would hang around for replacement chips from Intel.
